Omschrijving
Stadhuis. Sierlijk laat-gotisch bouwwerk op rechthoekige plattegrond, gebouwd 1534-1539 naar ontwerp van Rombout Keldermans. Het uit een kelderverdieping met twee verdiepingen bestaande gebouw draagt een hoog zadeldak, dat aan voor- en achterzijde afgesloten door trapgevels met veelhoekige en overhoekse pinakels. De door natuurstenen banden verlevendigde, bakstenen gevels bezitten vensters met natuurstenen kruiskozijnen en korfbogen, waarin traceringen met driepassen. Tussen vensters van de benedenverdieping ronde, bakstenen kolonetten, waarop gebeeldhouwde consoles, waarop oudtijds beelden hebben gestaan. Bordesstoep uit 1755 met schildhoudende leeuwen. Op de zuid- oosthoek een kaak. Inwendig beneden de voormalige vleeshal, door zandstenen zuilen in drie beuken verdeeld, en door kruisribgewelven overkluisd. Hierboven de Burgerzaal, oudtijds vierschaar, thans trouwzaal, met moer- en kinderbalken. Boven deze zaal de vroegere schepenzaal, met moer- en kinderbalken en tegen de noordwand een schouw uit 1636. Ten noordwesten van de Burgerzaal, thans Burgemeesterskamer, heeft een balkenzoldering met gebeeldhouwde sleutelstukken, die het stadswapen voorstellen. Rococoschouw uit 1762 met Justitiabeeld van de Zuid-Nederlandse beeldhouwer Walterus Pompe. Voor het stadhuis, aan weerszijden van het bordes twee hardstenen palen met schampijzers, bekroond door smeedijzeren lantaarns, vermoedelijk 1755. Description
Town Hall. Elegant late-gothic building on rectangular plan, built 1534-1539 after a design by Rombout Keldermans. The building, consisting of a cellar storey with two storeys above, carries a high gabled roof, which is closed on the front and rear by stepped gables with polygonal and corner pinnacles. The brick facades, enlivened by bands of natural stone, have windows with natural stone cross windows and arch windows, in which traceries with trefoils. Between windows of the ground storey round brick colonettes, on which carved consoles, on which formerly statues stood. Broad steps from 1755 with shield-bearing lions. On the south-east corner a pillory. Internally below the former meat hall, divided by sandstone columns into three aisles, and covered by cross rib vaults. In front of the town hall, on either side of the steps two sandstone posts with decorative irons, crowned by wrought-iron lanterns, presumably 1755. The town hall was restored in 1941-1949, whereby the crowning polygonal wooden roof tower was rebuilt in somewhat modified proportions, the function of the rooms was changed and on the north side a secretariat building was erected in quasi-17th century forms.
