Exterior description and setting

End of terrace three-storey rendered house, built c.1924. Rectangular on plan facing north, built as one of four identical houses on the south side of Park Road.

Pitched natural slate, roll-moulded terracotta ridge tiles, redbrick chimneystack and plastic guttering to timber fascia. Painted rough-cast rendered walling. Square-headed window openings with rendered surrounds, masonry sills and timber sash windows with ogee horns.

Front elevation is two windows wide with a three-sided canted bay window to the ground floor having replacement uPVC window on concrete sill. Off-centre square-headed door opening with original double-leaf flat-panelled timber doors, rectangular overlight and three-centred arched concrete canopy supported on concrete brackets. Door opens onto stone step to concrete paved footpath.

East side elevation abutted by adjoining house No.39 (HB26/02/020B).

Redbrick three-storey rear elevation abutted by lower gable-ended two-storey redbrick return. Square-headed window openings with some replacement concrete lintels, masonry sills and uPVC windows.

Gabled west side elevation is blank with redbrick walling laid in English garden wall bond.

Setting:
Forming part of a terrace of four similar houses lining the north side of Park Road.

Historical information

The current house is one of a terrace of four, built in 1924 by McIntyre Brothers, contractors and is first shown on the fifth edition OS map of 1931. (Valuation Records)

This area bordering the southern edge of the Ormeau Park was slowly developed over the closing decades of the nineteenth century and the opening decades of the twentieth. Park Road was the last of three residential roads, including North Parade and South Parade, to be developed connecting the Ormeau and Ravenhill Roads and was laid out subsequent to the construction of the Cooke Centenary Church in the early 1890s. In 1901 there were only six houses in Park Road, by 1931 the road had been fully developed.
A terrace of four houses enters valuation records in 1924, all built by McIntyre Brothers and valued at £21, except for the current dwelling which has a motor house to the rear, bringing the valuation to £23. A further three houses were added to the terrace subsequently. These were ‘in progress’ in 1924 and enter valuation records in 1925. There are no significant changes in the valuation over ensuing years, other than those brought about by the general revaluation of property.

Number 37 was initially called ‘Rosita’. The first occupant to be noted is J W Fenwick, a manager, who lived in the house until at least 1948, when his wife Mrs H Fenwick took over. By 1950 the occupant was Miss E J Juste.

Although the house retains its historic detailing and has group value with the rest of the terrace, it is not of sufficient architectural or historic interest to warrant listing.
