The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
Small road bridge over the River Blackwater giving access to a former mill complex. The bridge is situated off a narrow [?private] road just N of the Saintfield Road, less than 1 mile W of the hamlet of Balloo.
The bridge is (random) rubble built with a small area patched in brick at the W end of the S side. Two low segmental arches. On the N side there are large protruding boulders between the arches which act as a cutwater. Rough coping to parapets, which appears to have been patched recently to the N side. The bridge is partly overgrown with ivy with some weeds to road, but it appears to be is good order.
Former Mill complex to NE seems to be used as stores.
Historical information
This bridge is shown on the OS Map of 1834. The valuation records state that the adjacent ‘flax mill and store’ were in possession of a Joseph Patton and had a rateable value of £3-19-0.
