The Department's description

Site (to the N of the Craigarusky Road on the NE edge of the hamlet of Balloo) of former long single storey dwelling, now demolished with new dwelling built on site.

First Survey record: ' Single storey cottagewith forward wing on West. Roof slated, gable ens. Brick chimneys. Walls grey roughcast. 3 double hung windows, horizontal astragals. Recent door between windows 2 and 3 and store door in righthand shed on righthand gable. Condition fair. Main cottage about 85 feet.'

A building is shown on this site on the OS maps of 1834 and 1859-60 which probably largely corresponded to the house demolished recently. The building is not noted in the valuation records of c.1835 (suggesting it was well below rateable value), however, in c.1861 it was leased to a William Russell by Samuel Murland, with the ‘house offices and land’ having a rateable value of £18.
