Exterior description and setting

Greatly extended single storey house on the SE side of the Ard View Road, directly opposite the entrance to Ard View House, less than 1 mile S of Killinchy village.
Front NW facade has a right of centre timber sheeted door with window with modern frame to right. To the left of the doorway are three similar windows, with that nearest door double in size.
The SW gable is blank.
To the NE this house has been greatly extended (and more than doubled in size), as a ‘wing’/return has been recently added, which has modern windows and doors throughout. This section sits at a right angle to the original house (with an odd ‘chamfered’ section where the NE gable used to be), and is mainly single storey but where the ground slopes to the SE, it is two level.
The rear of the original section has a small, left of centre, lean to extension with a sheeted door to its SW face and a modern window (as front) to its SE face. To the left side of this extension is another window (as before), with a further two to the right side.
The entire facade is finished in a contrived looking ‘wavy’ render, which was probably intended to mimic the unevenness of a whitewashed rubble facade
The roof of the entire house is gabled with Bangor blue slates. Two rendered chimney stacks to original section. PVC rw goods.

Historical information

The 1834 and 1859-60 OS maps show a building on this site which probably corresponds with the original section of this house. The siting of the building close to the entrance of Ard View house suggests that it may have been built by the incumbent Potter family as a gate lodge, a suggestion voiced by the present owner of Ard View. But whilst the property undoubtedly once belonged to the Potters (Robert Potter is noted as the owner in the 1861 valuation returns), it sits on the other side of the road from the entrance to Ard View and could not be termed a gate lodge in the accepted sense.
The large wing/return was added recently [?c.1990].
