Exterior description and setting

Long, single storey house on the E side of Main Street, Killinchy, much ‘modernised and extended in recent times.

Front W facade has a right of centre modern doorway with recent brick pier surround, with shallow pitched felted gabled roof, forming a ‘porch’ around a modern panelled and glazed door with large sidelight. To the left of this are four sash windows, with a further two to the right. The windows vary in size marginally.
The S gable is blank and to the N the house merges with a gabled outbuilding.
The rear is almost entirely dominated by a large single storey flat roofed return with large modern windows and a door.
The entire facade is finished in limestone chip render with chamfered quoins and smooth rendered surrounds to windows. Chamfered base. The roof has Bangor blue slates and three yellow brick chimney stacks. PVC rw goods.
Low rendered garden wall to front.

Historical information

A long building matching the present house is shown on the 1834 and 1859-60 OS maps, which probably corresponds to that we see today. The building was below rateable value at the time of the first valuation survey (c.1835) and no details are given, however, in 1861 the ‘house’ with ‘office’ was leased from Robert Potter of Ard View by John Finlay, an ancestor of the present owner. The presence of yellow brick chimneys and largely regular plain sash windows suggests the property was renovated in the early 1900s. The enlarged entrance and flat roofed extension are obviously of more recent (1960s-70s) vintage however.

Evaluation

Long single storey house of probable pre 1834 origin, renovated c.1900 and again c.1960s-70s when a modern extension, enlarged entrance and limestone chip render were added. The layout appears to have been altered also.
