Exterior description and setting
Site, on a slight rise to the S of the Moss Road (c.2 miles SE of Ballygowan), of a former single storey thatched vernacular dwelling, now demolished with modern house in place.
The original house was described in the original survey (22nd Feb. 1974) as a ‘Single storey cottage. Roof thatched, gable ends. Chimneys rendered and brick. Wall rendered and whitewashed. NE front has 4 drop hung windows [with] horizontal astragals. Glazed and panelled door between windows 3 and 4. Condition fair. Front about 55ft.’.
The house was demolished c.1977 and a new dwelling built in place.
Historical information
A building is shown on this site on the OS maps of 1834 and 1858. The valuation records of 1834 make no mention of the property (presumably because it was below rateable value), but the land immediately around it was in the hands of a John Moorhead, who probably ultimately leased it from the Gordon family of near by Florida Manor. In 1858 the house was in possession of a William Wightman with the ‘house and offices’ having the lowly [rateable] value of £1-10-0. Interestingly, when first surveyed in 1974 this property belonged to another William Wightman, presumably a descendant of that of 1858.
