Exterior description and setting
Site, on the W side of the Magherascouse Road c.2 miles S of Comber, of a former single storey house, demolished in 1996 with new dwelling built in place.
The 1st survey (25th Feb. 1974) described the former property as a ‘Single storey house with attic and lower extension on left hand and recent back set extension on right hand. Roof slated, gable ends. Chimneys rendered. Wall rendered and white washed. Main house S front has 2 drop hung windows, vertical astragals and central “Ards” doorway with plain stone semicircular archivolt and keystone, on stone pilasters, enclosing decorated fanlight and glazed flush panel door. Left hand extension has 2 windows one block , the other top hung. Condition fair. Front of main house about 35 feet. Adjoining adjacent outbuildings with date stone 1876’.
The outbuildings are still present.
Historical information
A building is shown on this site on the OS maps of 1834 and 1858. The 1st valuation survey of 1834 makes no mention of the property (it was probably below rateable value) and the map to accompany the 2nd valuation of c.1863 is currently missing, however the dwelling was probably (ultimately) leased from Lord Dufferin, the proprietor of Magherascouse townland at the time of both surveys.
The presence of a symmetrical front façade and a ‘Ards’ doorway suggests that the house on this site until recently dated from c.1830s-40s, the period in which this type of formality appears to have become popular among the more modest dwellings in the Strangford/Ards area. Alternatively the façade may have represented a remodelling of an existing property.
The house was demolished in 1996, but a large two storey outbuilding, with a date stone of 1876, has survived.
