The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
Site of former Kennel Bridge (over the Enler River just N of Comber) demolished c.1995 with new bridge constructed in place. The new bridge is of different design and construction from its predecessor, with a single arch instead of two main arches (over the river) and three ‘accommodation’ arches to the fields on either side.
The new bridge may have made use of some of the sandstone from the former structure as facing.
Description from 1st Survey:
" Long narrow roadway bridged over the Enler River and valley in sandstone and basalt rubble. Rough broken rock faced coping to parapets. 2 elliptical arches with concrete reinforced cut water over river and 3 accommodation arches between fields on either side - elliptic and segmental - one set rough dressed voussoirs. Wide buttresses on east side and wide and heavy concrete buttresses on west side."
Historical information
This bridge is shown on the OS Maps of 1834 and 1858-60, just north of the site of the ruin of Mount Alexander House. In recent years the structure fell into disrepair and the bridge appears to have been demolished c.1994-95, with the new bridge completed in the latter year
