Exterior description and setting

No.4 William Street is part of a two and a half storey gabled terrace of shops, offices and flats set of the W side of William Street with a return into Corry Street.

The entire terrace is built of squared Scrabo sandstone rubble the main roof has Bangor blue slates with four main rendered chimneys.

To the left on the ground floor is a doorway with surround similar to previous, but with plain fanlight. To the left is a large modern shop front with large modern fixed light window and glazed door and PVC sign board above. The cill of this window sits just above the original cill course. Plain render below cill course. To the first floor are three sash windows with Georgian panes.

To the rear is small-ish two storey gabled return which is rendered and has PVC windows. To the gable of the return is a dilapidated looking, single storey rubble built shed a window opening on whose W facade has now been blocked up. This shed has a mono-pitched roof. The attic windows, ground floor windows on the rear facade of the main house are now blocked. To the right on the first floor the window opening now has a PVC frame.

The main roof to the rear is covered in asbestos free slates with two large Velux windows. There are two large Velux windows to the front as well. Cast iron rw goods.

Historical information

Only part of this terrace is shown on the revised OS Map of 1858-60, possibly Nos.2-4 William Street. The return to Corry Street does not appear to have been built at this date, nor does No.8 William Street.
The Shop front front to No.4 William Street is a fairly recent insertion.

Evaluation

Substantial two storey terraced block house of c.1840-50, in Scrabo stone, with late Georgian appearance. The front facade of this terrace has been considerably altered with the insertion of a shop front and most of the rear facade openings are now blocked.
