Milliken’s Mausoleum

Exterior description and setting

Mausoleum/family vault, of possibly c.1860-70, situated a short distance to the SE of Concord Farm, off the Tullynagardy Road, c.1 mile N of Newtownards.

The structure is rectangular with canted (chamfered) corners and a shallow pitched roof.

The facade is rendered and lined with a castellated and dentilled cornice with stunted finials in the centre of the E and W elevations. [?Were these finials once taller.] Panelled frieze below cornice, with chamfered plinth to base.

The W facade contains a small central doorway with recessed semicircular arched timber panelled door with upper roundel.

The E facade has a cut stone rose window, with recently replaced coloured glass.

The roof is rendered with a decorative crested clay ridge.

Historical information

This mausoleum is the family vault for the Milliken family who have been in possession of the adjoining ‘Concord Farm’ for the last two centuries. The structure does not appear to be shown on the OS Map of 1860 and may date from c.1860-70.

Sturdy looking, but largely plain mausoleum of possibly c.1860-70, whose main point of interest lies in the fact that it is sited on private land close to a farm house.
