Exterior description and setting

Pair of small single storey terrace houses with attics, possibly originally mid 19th century, but whose present appearance with half –dormers and label mouldings suggests major alteration of c.1900. The houses are set on the E side of Warren Road, to the N of Donaghadee town centre.

The asymmetrical (W facing) front façade of both properties are largely identical with a door to right, window to left and semicircular headed window set within a gabled half dormer to upper left. The window frames and the doors are modern. Label moulding above all ground floor openings (linked with a string course), with a moulded surround to the half-dormer windows. The whole front elevation is finished in painted lined render.

The rear of both properties could only be observed from a distance. No.13 has a large two storey gabled return to the left at the rear. This return appears to be of relatively recent construction, with a modern window to each floor on the (irregular) gable with a modern window and door to the ground floor of the N face. To the rear façade of the main section of the house (to right of the return) there is a window with modern frame to the ground floor with a similar (but smaller) window to the upper level set in a gabled half-dormer. The entire rear elevation of no.13 is finished in unpainted render.

The rear elevation of no.15 is similar to no.13 in that it has a window to right with another set in a half-dormer above, but to left there is a single storey return with mono-pitched roof. Above the return (to rear façade of main house) is another window, much as those to right. The entire rear elevation is finished in painted render.

The gabled roofs of both properties are slated with a rendered chimney stack to both properties. Both have a small Velux window to front. The rw goods of both properties appear to be mainly PVC.

No.17 (to the N) is similar to nos.13 and 15 and was obviously built or renovated at the same time as its neighbours, however it now sports a very large flat roofed dormer to front.

Historical information

Buildings are shown on this general site on the OS town plan of 1859, however, it is difficult to be certain whether they correspond exactly to the position of those we see today. The facades of the present two buildings have a late Victorian / Edwardian look, suggesting the properties may date from c.1890-1910, or underwent a major renovation at this time.
