Exterior description and setting

Short terraced block consisting of three plain single storey houses of probable pre 1834 construction with small late 19th / early 20th century dormers. The block is set within a mixed terrace on the north west side of Main Street, Greyabbey.

All buildings are finished in rough cast to the front with a mixture of rough cast and plain render to the rear. All the (gabled) roofs are slated, with Tullycavey slates to the rear of No.16. All dwellings have a small gabled dormer to the front with decorative finial. The dormer to No.14 is being renovated and has no window, that to No.16 has a sash window and No.18's has a modern two pane window with upper opener. To the rear of No.14 the large two storey extension merges into the roof, whilst No.18 has a large flat roofed dormer. No.16 has a small cast iron skylight to the rear elevation of its roof. Three rendered chimney stacks. Cast iron rw goods to front elevation, PVC to rear.

The front (SE) facade of No.14 is asymmetrical, with a modern timber door, with glazed panel, to the left. Three stone steps to door. To the right of this is a window opening presently without a frame. To the rear there is a large two storey flat roofed extension, with PVC windows.

No.16 has a similar arrangement with c.1930s-40s partly glazed door and sash window to right. To the rear there is a single storey flat roofed extension, with a sash window to the left of this on main house.

No.18 has a timber panelled door , with decorative wrought iron hand rail to doorsteps. To the right is a fixed light window, with metal grille over glass. Simple timber shop signs between door and window. To the rear is a single storey flat roofed extension / store.

Historical information

A terrace is shown on this site on the 1834 OS map which probably corresponds with that we see today. These buildings may have begun life as examples of the ‘ground floor’ type noted in the 1837 OS Memoir description of Greyabbey, with the dormers added possibly around c.1900.
