Exterior description and setting

Two storey hipped roof farmhouse, with large rear return, set on the side of the Rowreagh Road a few miles south of Kircubbin.

Front S elevation has central glazed door with plain sidelights with three pane elliptical arch fanlight. ‘Dog’s tooth’ transom between door and fanlight. Two pane PVC window to left of door, one to the right and three similar (but slightly smaller) to first floor.

W gable of main house has window same as front in centre of ground floor with one to right on first floor.

E gable has similar arrangement except that ground floor window is timber sliding sash and case and is further to the right. E gable merges into large return which has hipped roof porch/ ‘conservatory’ to left with two sets of double sliding sash and case windows to the right and a further single sliding sash and case window to the far right. Four sash and case windows to first floor.

Rear of main house and W elevation of return have collection of PVC windows similar to front of house with tall flat roofed extension (with plastic oil tank on top) attached to W elevation of return. Rear of return has double sliding sash and case window to right on first floor with smaller single sliding sash and case window and two modern timber doors to ground floor (with one to right partly glazed).

Entire facade covered in Tyrolean finish and lined, with chamfered plinth. Chamfered quoins to front and E elevations and rear of return. Two centred yellow brick chimneys with, dentilled corbelling, to main house and two to return. PVC gutters and down spouts.

Recent farm buildings to rear.

Historical information

Various buildings are shown on this general site on the 1834 OS Map, one of which appears to match the site of the present rear return. The main section of the present house may have been constructed c.1860 with the older structure largely rebuilt to become the return, or possibly demolished and the return built in its place. The current owner (1997) informed the writers that he believed the return had been built by a local sea captain named Maxwell, but did not know the date of its construction.

Much extended two storey, hipped roof Victorian farm house of c.1860-70, which is dominated somewhat by the large
return to the rear, and whose front elevation has been rendered bland by the inclusion of a modern door and PVC windows.
