Exterior description and setting

Two storey hipped roof house of c.1850 with decorated doorway, chamfered quoins and plinth, situated on a rise off the Glastry road, roughly a mile west of Kircubbin.

Front SW elevation has centred timber panelled door with decorative ‘radial’ segmental arch fanlight with decorative sidelights, separated from door and moulded architrave by decorative timber pilasters with brackets. To left of doorway is sliding sash and case window with horizontal astragals, with similar window to right of door and three, evenly spaced, to first floor.

NW gable has two similar windows to ground floor (with one to left slightly smaller) with one to left on first floor also. Gable merges into gable of full height lean to extension at rear.

SE gable has similar windows to right on ground and first floors, with that to first floor shorter.

Rear has gabled two level return at left and full height lean to extension to right, with most windows similar to before, but with modern timber (kitchen) window to ground floor, right of lean to extension.

Front and gables of main house finished in lined render and painted with chamfered quoins and chamfered plinth, with rough cast render to rear.

Roof of main house hipped, with that to return gabled. All roofs have Bangor blue slates with two corbelled yellow brick chimneys centred to main roof. Tall red brick chimney to gable of return. Cast iron gutters and down spouts.

Rubble built outbuildings to rear.

Historical information

The 1834 OS map shows a group of buildings on this site, though none match the size and positioning of the present house. The revised map of 1860, however, shows the main section of the house roughly as today, and so it may be concluded that this house dates between c.1835 and 1860. The style of the window frames (if original) indicate the house may have been built in the 1850s. The decorated doorway was restored recently.

Compact, two storey, hipped roof farmhouse of c.1850-60 with decorated doorway. The rear of the house has been substantially extended, possibly in the early 1900s.
