The Department's description

Two storey shop and house at the end of a terrace at the N end of Main Street, Kircubbin.

Front SW elevation has large modern shop front to left, with central recessed door between two fixed light windows and large PVC internally illuminated shop sign above (shop is No.24). House timber panelled door to right of shop front with simple moulded surround and decorative keystone. Tripartite sliding sash and case window to right of door without astragals, but with similar surround as door. Three similar windows to first floor , with ‘cill’ course (all of first floor belongs to No.26). Metal projecting shop sign to left on first floor.

Exposed gable to NW is blank but has ‘pediment’.

Rear has large single storey flat roof extension and mixture of single, double and tripartite sliding sash and case windows.

Front facade and gable have ‘Tyrolean’ finish with chamfered quoins, rear finished in rough cast.

Pitched roof with Bangor blue slates and two corbelled red brick chimney stacks. Slight overhang at eaves. Eaves course. Cast iron ogee gutters and down spouts to main house and PVC to extension.

In photographs of Main Street in c.1910, there are two much smaller dwellings, built on the squint, shown on this site one which appears to have been an inn. As the present building is radically different in size, appearance and plan form from these, it must be assumed, therefore, that this property dates from some time after c.1910, perhaps c.1915-20, with the extension to the rear added, perhaps, in the 1970s.

Two storey house and shop built possibly c.1915-20 on the site of much older smaller dwellings. The house is largely untouched but the shop front is of the bland 1970s variety with modern windows and signage.
