Exterior description and setting

Large, sprawling two storey farm house, built around a part single part two storey dwelling of probable pre 1834 origin, but much extended and modernised in recent years and now, to all intents and purposes, a modern house bearing little resemblance to its former self. The property is set to the E of Deerpark Road, roughly a mile N of Portaferry.

The building is now L-shaped and is entered via a (modern) door to the E façade of the portion to the N. Joined to the S of this portion is a longer section running E to W. To the S façade of this section there is a large single storey porch/sun room extension. The porch covers what was the original main entrance, but this does not appear to be used as such any more. This section was part single, part two storey when first surveyed in April 1971, with the two storey section flanked by single storey 'wings'. Since then the whole block has been raised to two storey.

The window openings throughout the building all appear to be modern and all have modern frames. All sections of the roof are covered in concrete tiles and the entire façade is finished in a limestone chip render with smooth render 'quoins'.

Historical information

A building is shown on the site of the larger wing of this house on the OS map of 1834. The valuation records of 1838 inform us that this particular property was a part single, part two storey house belonging to a William McBurney, which was relatively newly built at that stage (they graded it 'A'). From these details it would appear that this 1838 building is substantially that which was surveyed in 1971.

In 1979 the property was greatly altered and extended when the whole of the original section was raised to two storey and a larger extension added to the rear.
