Exterior description and setting
Site, at the junction of Newcastle Road and Kearney Road (c.3 miles SE of Portaferry) a of former, single storey, mid 19th century school house, demolished 1974 with a single storey dwelling house built on site.
When surveyed in November 1970 it was described as 'Single / sty bldg. Roof slated. Chimneys rendered. Gabled ends. Projecting verges and eaves. Walls random split rubble. 4 - casement windows. 2 / light. Horizon. astrags. Ward [wood?] shutters. Door at R/H, sheeted & glazed panel blocked.
Condition poor. Unoccupied. Front about 32 ft'
Historical information
The building formerly on this site was a National School built in 1853. The school closed in 1930 and was demolished in 1974.
To the north of this site, roughly half a mile along the Newcastle Road is a converted school now used as dwelling, which was the original Kearney School established in 1823 with grants from the Kildare Place Society. This particular school was replaced by the National School in 1853.
