Exterior description and setting

The left hand house in a two storey terrace block containing two small, informal, houses of probable pre 1834 construction. The block is set on the E side of the sloping Ferry Street.

The front (W) façade of No.10 is asymmetrical. To the left one large opening which contains a large coachway with timber sheeted double door. To the right of this (and separated by a narrow timber pier) is a plain timber sheeted front door with an adjoining sliding sash window (separated from front door by a wooden pier). To the first floor is a double sash window. Stone cills to all windows. Paint used to simulate plinth.

The rear façade has the rear of the coachway to the right on the ground floor. The reamainder of the ground floor was obscured from view thanks to a high wall to the immediate S of the coachway. To the first floor are three windows, with that to the centre set at a lower [?stairwell] level. The window to the right has a modern frame, the others have sash. The rear façade is finished in unpainted rough cast.

Both this house and No 12 next door have gabled roofs covered with fibre cement slates. Blue brick chimney with simple corbelling and matching pots in center and rendered chimney stack between houses. Eaves course. Cast iron gutters and down spouts.

The rear façade of No.10 has a large carriage arch timber sheeted door to the right. To the right is a small yard (no access) To the center is an intermediate level window which lights the half landing. To the right at higher level; is a modern window to the bathroom. To the left is a sash window. (with no astragals) The elevation is finished in unpainted rough cast.

Historical information

On Patrick O'Hare's map of 1799, a building (or buildings) is shown on this site (combined site of Nos 10 & 12), in possession of a Hugh Donning. Two, two storey houses are recorded on the site in the valuation of c.1835, which were then in the possession of a John McMullan and a John Edwards. These 1835 buildings may be substantially those we see today.

Both houses (with outbuildings and the coachway to the north end) are also indicated on the c.1861 valuation map, by which stage they were occupied by an Anne Hogan and a Margaret McCombe.
