Exterior description and setting

Detached symmetrical three-bay two-storey vernacular house, built c. 1850 and located to the north side of Marshallstown Road, Carrickfergus. Rectangular-on-plan with central single-storey porch to south and single-storey lean-to extension to west gable.
Roof is pitched natural slate with brick corbelled eaves; half-round cast-iron rainwater goods; brick gable chimneystacks with clay pots. Walls are roughcast rendered; windows are replacement uPVC casements mimicking 6/6 timber sliding sashes with painted masonry cills (poorly detailed lead sheeted cills to rear.)

Principal elevation faces south and contains central entrance porch with pitched natural slate roof; two windows at each side; five windows at first floor.

Left gable is abutted by single-storey lean-to extension; exposed section is blank.

Rear elevation has scattered fenestration with timber sheeted entrance door off-centre to right; two windows to right; single window to left. First floor contains timber sheeted loft door off-centre to left; single window to left; three windows to right (two outer diminished.)

Right gable is blank with cast-iron rainwater hopper to right.

Set on an elevated site to the north of Marshallstown Road with views over Carrickfergus; elevated yard to rear with outbuildings to north and enclosed by dry stone walling and cast-iron gates. A circular roughcast random rubble pier and cast-iron gate enclose a small front garden at the south-east corner.

Historical information

The building is shown on the first edition OS map of 1832. Griffith’s Valuation records the property as a ‘house, offices and land’ occupied by James Mann, and leased from the Marquis of Donegal. The building valuation is £4.

Detached symmetrical three-bay two-storey direct-entry strong farmer's house built c. 1850; located to the north of Marshallstown Road, Carrickfergus. The substitution of inappropriate windows detracts substantially from this otherwise interesting mid-Victorian house.
