Exterior description and setting

Attached two-bay two-storey end-terrace, built c.1840. located to the east side of Islandmagee Road. Rectangular-on-plan with single-storey gabled porch to north-west.

Roofs are pitched and natural slated; red brick chimneys with original clay pots to party wall and gable. Walling is ruled-and-lined painted render. Windows are timber framed 2/2 sliding sash divided horizontally with margin lights; painted masonry sills.

Principal elevation faces west and comprises window to each bay at ground and first floor. Left bay abutted at ground floor by porch containing single window; window to south; vertically sheeted timber entrance door to north.

North gable contains single window to first floor right.

East elevation contains vertically sheeted timber door, enlarged timber casement window at ground floor right; two windows at first floor (no margin lights).

South elevation abutted by HB22/05/004B.

Set within garden to west, with enclosed yard to east. Bounded to road to west by harled rubble walling supporting square gate pillars (repaired with brick).

Historical information

A building first appears on the second edition Ordnance Survey map of 1857. Griffith’s Valuation of 1859 records a house valued at £1, occupied by Eliza Pinkerton, lessor William English.

The Valuation Revisions of 1886 record the occupier as Mrs [Marshall?], revised in 1894 to Paul Carson. The lessor is revised to Gordon Butler in 1893. In 1886 two other houses appear listed below this entry, which are likely to correspond to the properties 133 and 135. Each building is valued at £1. The final entry in 1908 records the property as vacant.

An attached two-bay two-storey end-terrace, in a nineteenth-century terrace of three located to the east side of Islandmagee Road. The house is modestly detailed and, despite some alterations to the interior, still retains many original features. The house, together with neighbouring dwellings, is located on a prominent site, contributing to a well-preserved group of architectural merit.
