Exterior description and setting

Semi-detached two-bay two-storey (with attic) Arts & Crafts style house, built c. 1914, located to the north side of Lenamore Avenue. Rectangular-on-plan with two-storey porch to east, single-storey gabled return to north-west.

Roofs pitched and tiled with timber bargeboards; roughcast chimneys with projection to base; original clay pots. Walls are painted roughcast with corbelled eaves. Square-headed replacement uPVC casement windows with original stained glass to toplights; concrete sills.

Principal elevation faces south. To left, window at ground and first floor, dormer to attic shared with adjoining house (HB21/11/007A). Right bay projects and is gabled; bowed window with flat rolled lead roof over moulded cornice, single window at first floor, small louvered opening to attic.

West gable is abutted by adjoining house (HB21/11/007A).

North elevation abutted at right by return containing square-headed replacement uPVC glazed door. Ground floor contains two windows; single window to right and small window to centre at first floor, skylight to roof.

East elevation abutted to centre by gabled porch (splayed at ground floor left) containing, at ground floor, original timber panelled entrance door with glazed lights at left surmounted by round-arched-headed hood-moulding, continuous as string course over small window at right; at first floor, tripartite window with stepped sill; dormer to attic. Exposed wall has single window at each floor.

Setting

Site bounded to all sides by mature garden and hedging. Access from Lenamore Avenue through square rendered pillars at south.

Historical information

The building is first shown on the fifth edition OS map of 1920.

The corresponding Valuation Revision book from the period 1910 to 1920 shows several properties under the plot reference number, the first is an ‘office and land’ occupied by Thomas Houston, which is valued initially at £2.10s then revised to £5. The next entry is a ‘house and garden’ with the same occupier, the building valuation is initially £7 then revised to £14. The final property under the site reference is a ‘house, office and land’, with the occupier listed as Maud Atkinson, and the lessor as ‘Isabella Houston’. This building is valued at £16.10. According to the owners (who are in possession of the original deeds) the property was built around 1914 by Kilpatrick Builders.

This semi-detached two-bay two-storey Arts & Crafts style house, built c. 1914, located to north of Lenamore Avenue The house retains some of its original architectural character through detailing to exterior, such as Arts & Crafts inspired entrance door to internal fireplaces and timberwork. The house is set in a residential area of Jordanstown. It is a late example of the type and not of the best quality or design.
