Exterior description and setting

Freestanding two-stage granite war memorial, built c.1945, located in Memorial Park to west side of Ballynure Road. The memorial is approximately three metres high, facing east. It consists of a square partially rock-faced pedestal over concrete base on which are fixed names of war dead in applied lettering. The pedestal supports a further tapering plinth detailed with memorial inscription and moulded cornice, all surmounted by an obelisk.

All remaining elevations of the memorial are blank.

Setting

Set on a c.12 ft square elevated grass mound; the park is accessed by an ornate iron gate with cast-iron arch over, supported on cast-iron piers of open scrollwork.

Historical information

The memorial was erected after the Second World War. There is a thirteenth century Norman motte, built as a defensive outpost of Carrickfergus Castle, located within the Memorial Park.

Evaluation

A simple war memorial erected to commemorate local veterans consisting of a squat obelisk on an enlarged base. The monument and nearby gates dominate the park and are a local landmark. The stonemasonry is plainly detailed, but well executed. However, it is a relatively common type of which there are better examples.
