Exterior description and setting

A basalt rubble and boulder structure built into the side of a hillock. Battered front faces angled back slightly to each side of a deeply recessed opening with splayed reveals. Four stages of corbelled lintels are corbelled out over the small opening hole at ground level which has a large lintel. The top is covered over with earth and surface growth to such an extent that no trace of the charging hole is visible. Mature trees have taken root in the front of the structure.

SETTING: The structure stands in a very rural area, on sloping ground surrounded by trees and bushes in a field to the side of a house, Glenville (HB20/15/017).

Historical information

Precise date of building not known but it may date from before the time of the present house, which appears on the OS map of 1858, and was probably used to provide lime for the building of earlier buildings on the site. Not indicated on the earlier OS maps, of 1832, 1858, or 1901, but shown on the map of 1965-7.
