The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
Demolished and replaced by a housing development.
Described in the first survey in 1971 as "A two-storey seven bay house with harled walls and hipped roof. Lower windows and entrance have been somewhat altered; upper windows in recessed sash boxes retain full glazing bars. A two-storey return of lower eaves level is four bays long; lower windows retain full glazing bars in unrecessed boxes; three of upper windows have been modernised, one retains full glazing bars in unrecessed box. An entrance on the ground floor is recessed in an elliptical arched opening; the panelled door is flanked by patterned sidelights; the fanlight is decorated. A splayed single-storey bay occupies adjacent gable of main house."
Historical information
Built in 1801 as a boarding school by Rev Nathaniel Alexander, the Presbyterian minister. Described in the 1830s as "a good classical boarding school"; "an academy for both boarders and day scholars", and as being built of stone and lime. This building was previously listed and then de-listed and has now been replaced by a housing development.
