Exterior description and setting

A three-bay two-storey end-of-terrace house built c.1820, facing north and located on the south side of the Antrim Road. Rectangular in plan with single storey return to south and lean-to porch to re-entrant angle.

The roof is pitched natural slate with replacement red brick chimney to west gable. Timber fascia and Velux windows to south pitch. Walling is roughcast over smooth rendered plinth, corner banding. Windows are replacement double glazed sliding sash with smooth rendered chamfered surrounds.

The asymmetrical north elevation has two timber vertically sheeted false doors with transom light above to two central bays. Flanked by replacement tripartite sliding sash window to west and replacement 6/6 sliding sash window to east. First floor has two replacement timber double-glazed tripartite sliding sash window.

The rear elevation two replacement 6/6 sliding sash windows to ground floor at the west side, three replacement 6/6 casement windows to first floor. Single-storey, pitched slated return to the east side abutting terrace no. 890, (HB20/12/023F) Slated, lean-to extension to west of rear elevation has modern timber sheeted door to west side with flanking full height glazed panels which continue through south elevation.

West gable elevation is blank.

Historical information

Currently occupied by Warwick Stewart Architects, this terrace appears on the first edition OS map of 1834 and again on the fifth edition map of 1932. The occupier of No. 888 Antrim Road (HB20/12/023E) talks about a time when the terraces where connected internally and how the building remains as part of an important terrace block in terms of its historical association, as these houses are believed to be the original workers cottages, where the workers of the Castle Upton estate would have lived. Rebuilt after almost total destruction by Royal Troops following the Battle of Antrim 6th June 1798.

Evaluation

One of a terrace of six, this late eighteenth century two-storey roughcast end-of-terrac house has been much altered. The terrace occupies a defining position in the village of Templepatrick. Despite changes to internal layout and original fabric, the integrity of the group is maintained by the retention of original multi-paned windows with exposed boxes, and understated ornamentation such as the rendered plinth and architraves. The terrace is a relatively unusual example of urban vernacular, perhaps even estate architecture. Associations with the Battle of Antrim and the Castle Upton estate enhance the historical value of the terrace.
