Exterior description and setting

A terrace of one and two-storey houses and cottages with slated roofs and rendered walls. No. 2 has pebble-dashed walls with smooth rendered dressings; rectangular timber fixed light windows with top-hung vents; glazed and panelled door, and boarded garage doors. No. 4 has pebble-dashed walls with smooth rendered dressings; modern rectangular timber fixed light windows with opening casements; modern glazed and panelled door. No. 6 has similar walling to no. 4, with rectangular timber sliding sash windows, 1 over 1, with horns; rectangular timber panelled door set in pedimental feature of smooth render. No. 8 has roughcast walls, with smooth rendered dressings; rectangular timber windows, fixed lights with top-hung vents; modern glazed and panelled door. No. 10 has roughcast walls; windows are rectangular timber sliding sash, 1 over 1, with horns set in smooth rendered reveals; door is rectangular timber panelled. No. 12 has roughcast walls; windows are modern timber fixed lights with top-hung vents; door is panelled timber. No. 14 has similar walling to no. 12; windows are timber sashed, 1 over 1, without horns; door is glazed and panelled timber. No. 16 has wet dash rendered walls, with smooth rendered dressings; windows are timber sliding sash, 1 over 1, with horns, the one to the first floor set in a timber sheeted gabled half-dormer; door is glazed and panelled timber. South elevation of no. 16 has similar walling and windows as to front. Rainwater goods are cast iron except for no2. and 16 which have pvc.

Rear elevations have both flat-roofed and gabled rear returns.

SETTING: The buildings stand facing the road with their backs along the riverside.

Historical information

Nos. 2 and 4 built in 1931; precise date of nos. 6-16 not recorded. Part of the terrace appears on the OS map of 1832 but precise extent indeterminate. Part of the terrace at the south end appears as single storey thatched cottages in a view of 1908. The overall group may be dated to the early 19th century but individual houses have successively been raised a storey, remodelled, or re-roofed during the 19th and 20th centuries.
