The Department's description

Exterior description and setting

A rectangular building with roughcast walls, smooth rendered dressings and slated roof. Main entrance faces north but main regular 4-bay façade faces south. Arched openings to tall windows on long elevations but all windows blocked up. Moulded hoods to tall windows, with foliated stops.

SETTING: The buiding stands within its own grounds, set back slightly from the main street of the town, on a corner site.

Historical information

A rebuilding in 1881 of an earlier meeting house erected for Scottish settlers in c 1699-1700. The earlier building was described as being whitewashed and having had a double row of windows to each side.
It stands in the area of an ancient monument, SMR no. ANT 173.
