Exterior description and setting

A 3-storey, 2-bay gabled house in a terrace, with the ground floor shopped. Main entrance faces north.

North elevation: pitched roof of Bangor blue slates in regular courses; chimney on left-hand gable, of red brick.
Walling to upper floors is smooth cement render, painted. Windows to upper floors are rectangular timber sliding sash, 8 over 8, without horns, with exposed sash boxes, set in plain reveals, two windows to each upper floor.
Ground floor walling is smooth cement rendered, and lined, to each extremity of a modern timber shop front which comprises a large shop window, and doorway, to the left between panelled timber pilasters, and a recessed doorway to the right-hand end, recessed between similar pilasters; right-hand door, which is numbered 35, is rectangular timber panelled, with rectangular fanlight; reveals are timber panelled; across the ground floor shop front is a large projecting timber boxed frieze inscribed with the shop name.

Rear elevation: 4-storey, 2-bay. Roof of main front block is of Bangor blue slates in regular courses; chimney on right-hand gable, of rustic brick and yellow and red brick. Wall of main front block is rendered with wet dash; one window, to left-hand side, in rectangular timber sliding sash, 3 over 3, without horns, with exposed sash box. To right of window is a later 3-storey high rear return which returns across left-hand side of main front block: roofs of synthetic slates; walls of wet dash render; wooden eaves boards; looks like pvc gutter and downpipe, damaged. Windows are rectangular pvc fixed lights with top-hung vents.
Rear return has a 2-storey gabled projection to south and a bay to west with lean-to roof which contains a modern roof light, and a doorway containing a rectangular timber door with metal mesh panels.

Yard to rear is concreted; modern steel boundary railings to each side of rear yard. Yard opens into that of adjoining properties to west.

SETTING: The building stands within a terrace of houses and shops facing the main street.

Historical information

Precise date of building uncertain but a building appears on the site on the OS map of 1832.

This is a building originally of probably early 19th century date which despite external and internal alterations still has architectural and historic interest including group value with the two adjoining buildings.
