Exterior description and setting

A 1½ storey 3-bay rubble stone gatelodge. Main entrance faces west.

West elevation: hipped roof covered with later concrete tiles; one chimney on ridge, of concrete brickwork; overhanging eaves with black painted timber soffit; PVC rainwater goods.
Walling of basalt rubble with smooth rendered plinth; brick dressings to openings but later painted black.
Windows rectangular timber sliding sash, 2 over 2, with horns, the window to the right of main entrance being coupled; flat arches over windows. Central door is segmental arched; contains a tongued and grooved sheeted door of herringbone pattern with plain fanlight over.
North gable is of two different qualities of masonry, indicating later raising of the height. Overhanging verges with shaped and perforated timber brackets. Semi-circular arched window in apex of gable, sashed 4 over 4, with horns.
Rear elevation has a central 2-storey gabled rear return projecting from it. One window to right of rear return, modern rectangular timber fixed light with top-hung vent.
Rear return has smooth cement rendered walls; one modern timber window in each floor of gable, rectangular fixed light with top vent in ground floor, with casements above. Modern rectangular flush timber door in south side of return.
South gable similar to north gable.

SETTING: The building stands side-on to the main road, facing onto the driveway to the rear of Loughanmore outbuildings (HB20/06/006A), and set back from the main road slightly, behind the front boundary wall to the estate. Wall of basalt rubble with rough basalt rock copings. Driveway entered by a gateway comprised of a pair of large square piers of basalt rubble with roughly formed caps of basalt rubble, flanked each side by a pair of smaller square piers, all recessed back from the front boundary wall by curving screen walls, terminating in square end piers.
Main carriageway gates and flanking pedestrian gates are of plain wrought iron. The lodge and gateway are surrounded by mature trees.

Historical information

Precise date of building not known but a lodge is shown in this position on the OS map of 1832; later altered, raised in height and given hipped gables, probably in the 1860s at the same time as the outbuildings at Loughanmore were remodelled.
