Exterior description and setting

A 2-storey 3-bay gabled house. Main entrance faces east.

East elevation symmetrical. Roof of Bangor blue slates in regular courses. Walls of smooth cement render, lined, with raised quoins to extremities. Windows are rectangular timber sliding sash, without horns, 1 over 1 to 1st floor, replacing original 6 over 6 sashes, and 2 over 2 to ground floor, left-hand window; ground floor right-hand window is a timber 3-pane fixed light with a top-hung vent above. Raised moulded plaster surrounds to windows; projecting stone cill. Central doorway is set in an elliptically arched recess with a rectangular timber 4-panel door flanked by translucent glazed sidelights with wooden panels below, and fanlight with curvilinear glazing bars above, set behind a pair of freestanding fluted Ionic columns in cast iron painted white; painted timber entablature replaced to original design; three stone and concrete steps up to door.
Chimneys of red and yellow polychrome brick with modern pots, rebuilt c 1992 to original design.

South gable has two windows, one on each floor, sashed as previous to entrance front. Moulded timber barge boards to gable with oversailing eaves.

One window to north gable: modern rectangular timber fixed light with top-hung vent and side-hung casement.

Rear elevation and return has both sashed and modern windows.

SETTING: The house stands in a rural area facing a lane and set back from it within its own grounds. Attractive garden to front. Small pedestrian gateway at south-east corner of house; modern steel farm gate to north leading to farm buildings to rear and north: of no special interest except one small outbuilding has a datestone built into it, inscribed 'RB 1815'. Front boundary formed by a hedge with a main gateway of two cast iron ball finialed posts hung with a pair of looped iron gates.

Historical information

Precise date of building not known but it does not appear until the OS map of 1902, it probably dates from around 1860. The front gateway and part of the garden lie within the area of an ancient monument, no. ANT49: 16.

This is a mid-Victorian building of Georgian character which exhibits a fine porch of cast iron, in Ionic style, but is otherwise of no particular architectural interest
