Exterior description and setting

Detached three-bay single-storey nineteenth century house located to south of Moneynick Road. The plan is rectangular with slightly higher return to south east and extended canted bay to north elevation.

The roofs are pitched and slated with rendered chimneys to gables and another east of centre, each has replacement clay pot. The roof of the canted bay has clay finial to ridge tiles. Walls are ruled and lined render with simple corbelled eaves. Windows are timber top-hung casement with chamfered surrounds and painted masonry cills.

The principal elevation faces north. East bay has three windows, the central bay is abutted by canted bay. The west bay has two windows. The canted bay has windows to north cheeks and entrance door to west. Entrance door is timber panelled with fanlight and side lights.

East gable has a single window to north side and is abutted to south by return. The east elevation of the return contains a single window with two top openings. The south elevation has a single window to the east end.

South elevation to east end is gable end of return. To west side of return is kitchen extension with low pitched roof and chamfered south west corner, window to east side, and replacement timber door to centre. Window to west side of extension and to exposed south wall.

West gable is blank.

The site is bounded to road to north by hedge and alcoved entrance walls flanked by diamond caps, supported on mild steel gates. Hedge to west and south with replacement fence to south east corner. There is modern blockwork shed to south of the site. Windows and doors are blocked.

Historical information

The building first appears on the second edition 1857 OS map as a rectangular block without canted bay or rear extensions.

The building is located on the Moneynick Road, which was the turnpike road from Randalstown to Toomebridge, operating a toll system. On first appearance the extended canted bay suggests that the building may have operated as a toll house, as this feature is typical of that building type. However, no evidence has been found to support this and the cartographic evidence suggests that the bay is a later addition, placed after the toll system had been abolished.

Evaluation

Detached three-bay single-storey nineteenth century house. A plainly detailed single-storey house of vernacular proportions, with later nineteenth- and twentieth century alterations, including a prominent canted bay. It is of some interest as an unusual type but it has been compromised by later work and does not meet the statutory and policy tests as a building of special architectural or historic interest.
