Exterior description and setting
Free-standing boundary stone erected c.1800, with cast-iron plaque. Facing south located in a field on the grounds of Creevy House, to the south of Saintfield Road (B6).
Upstanding rough-hewn granite boundary stone with cast-iron rectangular plaque having a raised crown motif and stylized monogram letter ‘D’, mounted in lead.
Setting
Set in a hedgerow to a field on the south side of Saintfield Road on the grounds of Creevy House, marking a boundary to the estate of the Marquis of Downshire
Historical information
The boundary stone is not indicated on the historic OS maps owing to its diminutive scale.
The NIEA first survey card, 1982, describes the stone as a marker post of the Downshire Estate, evidence taken from the cast-iron plaque displaying a coronet over a letter “D” believing to denote the Downshire logo, however no evidence at the time of survey has confirmed this.
Possibly 19th century, similar dated crests having been identified within the local area. Spencer’s Bridge, Moira (HB19/22/062) bears a matching stone with crest and is possibly dated 1843. Further crests have been identified on buildings including Magherahinch House (HB19/22/054) dated 1838, and Magheradartin School (HB19/05/120) dated 1853.

Free-standing boundary stone with cast-iron plaque, erected c.1850. Marking the boundary of the estate of the Marquis of Downshire, the stone is not particularly well carved but the cast-iron plaque with its raised crown and decorative monogram are of considerable interest with reference to the history of the Marquis of Downshire and his formerly expansive estate.
