Exterior description and setting

Multi denominational chapel for the Phase 3 Cellular prison. Situated within its own weld mesh compound with simple vehicular/ pedestrian gates on the southern side. The chapel sits on the north side of an east west internal road to the south of which are the Phase 3 ‘H’ Blocks (‘H’ Blocks 6, 7, & 8). To the north of the chapel is open land. The tall concrete internal dividing wall between Zone F (administration area) and J (Phase 3 Maze Cellular) is located to the north west.

The body of the chapel comprised an octagonal structure, externally rendered and finished in pea-grit gravel. The chapel has a polygonal entrance block to the south and rectangular projection from the north side containing the altar and vestry. The roof is pitched and pyramidal in form comprising eight planes supported by internally exposed radial laminated timber truss beams. Windows are located on the east and west walls of the chapel and the alter area however are not stained or otherwise decorated.

To the south of the building and its fenced enclosure is a small grey brick security lodge with door to west and windows to all elevations. This structure had a slate pitched roof. The building is set in a gravel garden surrounded by a low grey brick wall.

Historical information

Built c.1985/6 and contemporary with the main prison entrance and visitor complex (Zone J). Contemporary and identical to multi denominational chapel in Maze cellular Phase 2. Prior to their construction all religious ceremonies are understood to have been carried out in the double cells of the ‘H’ Blocks (see HB19/04/030A).

Evaluation

Simple form, multi denominational Chapel (with visiting clergy) serving Zone J or Phase 3 of the Maze Cellular. A late addition, however an important structure in regard to operation of the Prison.
