The Department's description
Exterior description and setting
Small, ‘triangular’ granite (‘presentment type’) milestone of perhaps c.1780-1800, set next to the corner of the Down Civic Arts Centre at the corner of Irish Street and Scotch Street.
The milestone is well worn but ‘Castlewellan 9’ (miles) and ‘Newry [?24]’, and an OS benchmark, are still discernable on its SW face.
Historical information
This milestone is one of the Grand Jury Presentment-type milestones and may date from the late 18th century.
