Exterior description and setting

Single storey, rubble-built former outbuilding, of probable late 19th century construction, converted to dwelling house in 1985. The property is set to the N side of a short lane, to the E of Newcastle Road, within the village of Seaforde.

The front façade faces S and is (roughly) symmetrical. To the centre is a large elliptical arched opening which was originally a carriage entrance. This is brick dressed (as are most of the openings- with brick also used as ‘quoins’) and filled with a modern doorscreen. To the left is a relatively small window with modern multi-pane frame (all frames are similar). There is a similar window to the right of the doorway.

To the W gable there is a modern window, inserted in 1985. A tall rubble wall extends from the right hand edge of this gable. The E gable has a window as W gable. To the rear there are three windows of varying sizes and a modern door (to right).

The gabled roof is covered in natural slate with two Velux windows to the front and one to the rear. Single brick chimney stack (to E).

Historical information

Though this site is shown occupied by part of a long single storey terrace on the valuation plans of 1836-8 and c.1860, annotations to the latter plan show that the entire group had been demolished by at least c.1900. The present building, was built in c.1880-90 as a cart / carriage house, serving the then farm manager’s residence to the immediate west.

The building was converted to a dwelling house in 1985.
