Exterior description and setting

Two storey, gabled vernacular house of possible mid 19th century construction. The property is located at the end of a long lane (which rises up Clonachullion Hill), to the S of the Trassey Road, c.4 miles W of Newcastle. The building is set on a slope running E to W.

The front façade faces N and is asymmetrical. To the right of the façade is a small gabled porch with a modern half glazed door and a scalloped timber facia. To the left of this are three evenly spaced openings with modern two pane, timber windows. To first floor are four squat, evenly spaced, sash windows.(2 panes over 2).

The E gable is blank.

The S façade has a single storey gabled return to the left side but is otherwise blank. The S face of the return has no openings but has an external chimney to the right of centre of the apex. The W face of the return has a modern timber window (left of centre) while the E face has a plain timber door to the right with a two pane modern window to the left.

To the W gable is a gabled outbuilding with two painted timber doors, that to the right is set at a slightly lower level. To the far right is an additional lean-to outbuilding with a corrugated iron roof. Set well back and to the W side are two small sheds.

The façade of the house is mainly cement rendered, though the is evidence to earlier harling on the E gable and the porch. The roof is covered in natural slate and has two rendered chimney stacks, to centre and E gable. No rw goods.

Historical information

A building is shown on this site on the OS maps of 1834 and 1859. This may correspond, in part, to the building we see today, though the property’s present two storey appearance may be the result of a later 19th or early 20th century raising of the roof. A William Kane is listed as the occupant in the 1863 valuation, with the building itself rated at £2-10-0 (actually below rateable value).
