Exterior description and setting

Two storey, gabled vernacular house of possible mid 19th Century, with attached outbuildings. The house is set to the E of the Slievenaman Road 4 miles west of Newcastle. The property is set on a slope running roughly W to E.

The N front of the house proper is asymmetrical with a small flat roofed porch, with timber sheeted door to the right of centre. To the left is a window opening (now boarded) with smooth cement window surround. Directly above is a similar opening (but shorter) with a sash window.(2 panes over 2). To the right of the door is are similar windows to ground and first floors. The ground floor window is also blocked.

To the right(W) this façade merges with an outbuilding whose roof lie is actually level with the house, but, due to the rise in ground level, is actually single storey. This outbuilding which has two, centrally placed, timber sheeted door openings, to the N front, that to the right being set slightly higher. To the far right the façade merges with an additional small outbuilding which also has two timber sheeted doors. These doors are set to the left of centre.

The W gable of the larger out building rises above the smaller neighbour and is blank. The gable of the smaller outbuilding is also blank.

The E gable has one (2 over 2) sash window to the centre of the first floor. This has dressings as before. To the ground floor, slightly right of centre, is a small corrugated iron shed.

The S face has a large single storey return to the left of centre. To the left of the return, the wall is blank as is the S face of the small outbuilding. This return sits is to the rear / centre of the large outbuilding. To the far left on the W face of the return is a sheeted timber door, while the S face has one, centrally placed six pane steel window and the E face also has a six pane steel window to the centre. To the rear façade of the main house are two ground floor windows, with frames as front.

The roof to the house and the large out house are finished in natural slate while that to the large return appears to be finished in asbestos slate. The roof finish to the small out house is corrugated iron. The front facade of the house is finished in pebble dash. The piers to either side of the porch have a pattern created with black and white pebbles. The remainder of the walls are plain rendered.

Historical information

A house is shown on this site on both the 1834 and the 1859. It is likely that the present building corresponds in some way to that on both maps, but its present two storey appearance may be a result of a late 19th / early 20th century raising of the roof. A Patrick McClean is recorded as the occupant in the valuation returns of 1863.
