Exterior description and setting

Two storey, gabled vernacular farm house of possible mid 19th century origin, with small lean-to porch to front. A large barn merges with the E side while a lean-to ?byre merges to the W side. The house sits at right angles to the W of the Bog Road and is located approximately 5 miles W of the town of Newcastle.

The front façade faces roughly N and is asymmetrical. To the left of centre is a small lean-to porch with a timber sheeted door and a small slate roof. To the left is a small sash window, with a similar, but smaller, window to the first floor directly above. To the right are similar windows to the ground and first floors.

The E gable rises slightly above the adjoining barn, which has one large central timber sheeted door and a small pass door to the right. The W gable (which could not be observed face on) appears to have a large lean-to shed built against it.

The S facade of the house has one small ground floor window to the right side.

There is potless, rendered, chimney stack to each gable. The roof is finished in Bangor Blue slate. Most of the guttering is missing. The front of the house is finished in smooth render while the remainder is finished in random rubble. The adjoining outbuildings are finished in rubble. A small sloping farm yard sits in front of the house. A small yard to the rear may have been used as a pig sty. Both are finished in concrete.

Historical information

A building is shown on this site on the OS map of 1834, but is not noted in the contemporary valuation. In the valuation of 1863 the occupant is recorded as a John McAvoy, with the house possessing the rateable value of £1 (which was actually under the rateable threshold).

It is possible this building began life as single storey and had its roof raised at some point.
