Exterior description and setting

Two storey rubble-built gabled outbuilding, set on the edge of a field close to the junction of the Bryansford Road and the main road running through Bryansford village.

The S façade has a central timber sheeted door to the upper level which is reached via stone steps. The doorway has brick dressings. To the left of the doorway is a relatively small, square opening, with timber sheeting and dressings as doorway. To the right of the doorway is a similar small opening. To the right of the steps (at lower level) are three tiny slit openings with brick dressings. There is a similar opening to the left of the steps.

The N façade has three doorways to the ground floor. That to the left and centre are pedestrian doors with small accompanying ‘sidelight’ openings. The doorway to the right is a large double doorway. All have timber sheeted doors/coverings and brick dressings. Those to the left and centre have brick relieving arches, whilst that to the right has a concrete lintel. To the upper level are two small window openings (to left and centre), with a large loft doorway opening, to the right. All are timber sheeted, as below.

Both gables have a single small opening to the upper level, as S side. The N façade has a ground level doorway to the right, much has S façade, but whose lintel appears to have been replaced fairly recently. Almost directly above this is another similar doorway.

The façade is in fieldstone rubble with granite quoins and a brick eaves course. The gabled roof is covered in natural slate and has rendered parapets

Historical information

Though buildings are shown on this general site on the OS maps of 1834 and 1859, none match the position of this particular structure. Judging from its appearance (i.e. the use of brick dressings etc.) the present building may day from c.1880.
