Exterior description and setting

Cast iron water fountain with fluted column and domical cap with acorn finial. There is a spring loaded knob on the side which was turned to operate the fountain. The bucket support at the base is in place but fractured.

This fountain is sited in a prominent public postion in the centre of Strangford close to the slipway where the ferry operates to Portaferry.

Historical information

These fountains operate on pressurised mains water and were installed in the early part of the twentieth century when pressurised mains became available.

Evaluation

Water fountains such as this one were often situated in public positions and provided the water supply for the whole village before drinking water became available in individual houses. This is an increasingly rare example and has significant social and local interest. It has group value with another listed fountain at Quay Lane in Strangford.
