Exterior description and setting
Obelisk-like war memorial of c.1920-25 set on an small island at the junction of Main Street, Belfast Road and Crossgar Road.
The memorial is set on a stepped concrete base and is constructed in a grey artificial stone. Its lower portion consists of a square pedestal with a moulded base and cornice. The base is broken on each side by an inscribed block inscribed ‘1914-18’ to E, W and S sides, with ‘1939-45’ to N. Each side of the pedestal is panelled with N and W panels filled with bronze plaques with the names of the fallen of both World Wars.
Above the cornice there is a tympanum ‘blocking course to all sides, with moulded roundel motif. Above this course rises the tapering obelisk, which has a pyramidal head.
Historical information
This memorial, like many others, was probably erected between 1920 and 1925, with some modifications after World War Two.
