Exterior description and setting

Simple single storey gabled ‘pumping station’ of c.1900 in squared rubble with cream brick dressings, built as part of the Mourne-Belfast water conduit. The building is set in a hollow to the W of the Burren Road roughly 2 kilometres W of Ballynahinch. It adjoins a house of the same date (and same style) built as the residence of the employee who attended to the well house.

The S front is symmetrical with a semicircular arch headed door opening with double timber doors. Directly over the door is an oculus feature with timber louvered infill. This has also brick dressings

The N face has a matching oculus over a small sash (2/2) window with in / out brick dressings.

The E and W faces each have one off centre segmental arch headed window opening with a sash window (2/2) and brick dressings.

The external walls are constructed on a small projecting plinth with a chamfered brick dressing. The roof is covered with natural slate and has plain bargeboards. There is a corbelled brick eaves course. Walls are finished with squared rubble with in / out dressings to windows and as quoins. Cast iron rw goods.

Historical information

This pumping station was constructed in c.1900 by the Belfast & District Water Commissioners, as part of the Mourne Belfast water conduit. It appears to have been recently superseded by a recently built adjacent structure.
