Exterior description and setting

Site, on the S side of Drumnaconagher Road, roughly 2.5 miles E of Ballynahinch, of a small single storey house of possible pre 1834 construction, now demolished with large modern dwelling in place.

The original survey of March 1974 states that the now demolished house was a ‘single storey cottage. Roof slated, gable ends. Chimneys rendered. Walls rendered and whitewashed. Eaves course. NE front has two drop hung windows [with] horizontal astragals, and central projecting porch under extended overhang of main roof. Sheeted door. Now rendered stone curved wall each side of porch. Recent shed addition at left hand [SW] end. Adjacent single storey outbuilding forward on road front at left hand. Slated roof. Gable ends and walls as house. Condition poorish. Front about 38ft’.

Historical information

A building is shown on this site on the OS map of 1834, but is not recorded in the (near) contemporary valuation. It is probable that this building is substantially the same structure which was on the site until recently. In the second valuation of c.1863 the house is listed as the home of one Edward Marner, with a (below) rateable value of £1-5-0.

The building was demolished in c.1990 and there is a larger modern house now on the general site.
