Exterior description and setting

Substantial, relatively plain, two storey, hipped roof, farmhouse of 1886 with slight Regency appearance. The property is set to the E of the Downpatrick Road, c.1.5 miles SE of Crossgar.

The front façade faces W and is symmetrical. To the centre of the ground floor is a panelled timber door with margin paned sidelights with apron panels. The door and sidelights are topped with an elliptical fanlight with ‘spoke’ tracery. To either side of the door is a sash window with horizontal and vertical glazing bars (margin panes 6/6). To the first floor are three similar windows.

The N façade has two windows to the ground floor, and two to the first, all as front. A wall extends from the far left on this façade. The S façade is as that to N but without the wall.

The rear façade has a glazed door to slight right of centre with plain fanlight. To the left of this is an enlarged window with modern frame. To the left of this window is an inscribed panel which reads ‘This farmstead erected at W Hughes’s expense 1886’. To the right of the door is a window as front, with three similar windows to the first floor.

The whole façade is covered in painted lined render. The hipped roof is covered in natural slate. Two central ‘side on’ rendered chimney stacks with four matching pots each. Metal rw goods.

Historical information

As the plaque on the rear wall states, this house was built in 1886 ‘at W Hughe's expense’. It replaced a long single storey dwelling noted in the 1838 valuation returns as the home of one William Bingham, and which is marked on the 1860 OS map as ‘Moor Cottage’.
