Exterior description and setting

Substantial, but relatively plain two storey terrace house of perhaps c.1870s, with carriage arch, built as part of a larger block which contains another smaller house. The house is set on the N side of Killyleagh Street, close to the centre of Crossgar.

The front façade faces S and is asymmetrical. To the right of centre is the entrance which consists of a partly glazed door with fanlight, plain surround with moulded keystone. To the left is a sash window with vertical astragals and plain surround. To the left of this is a large elliptical arched carriage gateway with similar surround as main entrance and timber sheeted double doors with wicket gate. To the right of the entrance are two sash windows, as before, with five similar unevenly spaced windows to the first floor. The front façade is finished in rough cast with in/out quoins.

To the left at the rear is a large modern single storey extension, with gabled roof. There may be a window to the right of this (on main rear façade), but the angle of view obscured this section. To the first floor there are four windows. That to the far left was obscured from view by the roof of the extension (but appears to have a modern frame). To the right of this is a small window with coloured glass, (this window may originally have been larger but had to be shortened with the building of the extension); to the right again a larger window with modern frame, with another window to the right of this with sash frame as front. The rear façade is finished in a recently applied dry dash.

The gabled roof is covered in natural slate with three yellow brick chimneys. The rw goods appear to be mainly metal.

Historical information

The 1859 valuation town plan of Crossgar (which contains annotations of c.1900) indicates that this block was built some time after the former date. Judging from the style of the block it is possible that it may date from c.1870-80. The current owner believes it was originally used as the local police station, but map evidence suggests that up until the latter half of the 20th century, the station (or ‘barrack’) was always sited in Downpatrick Street.

The rear extension was added c.1980s.
