Exterior description and setting

Small, single storey, thatched, vernacular dwelling much extended at the rear in recent times. The house is set on the S shore of a sheltered bay (to the E side of the Quarterland Road, c.2 miles SE of Killinchy), largely cut off from Strangford Lough by the ‘Ringhaddy peninsula’ to the E.

Front (N) façade has a partly glazed door to the centre left. To the left of this is a four pane casement window, with two identical windows to the right of the door. These windows may have been enlarged at some stage. Both the E and W gables are blank.

To the left on the rear façade are two small-ish windows with modern multi-pane frames. To the right of these is a glazed door. To the far left on this façade there is a very large modern single storey extension. This extension, which has a part gabled and part hipped roof, stretches to the W of the original house, roughly on to the site where a gabled outbuilding/dwelling stood when the house was originally surveyed in September 1978.

The original house is finished in rough cast and painted. The roof is gabled and thatched. There are rendered parapets and rendered chimney stacks to each gable. There is another similar chimney stack to the W of centre of the ridge.

To the E of the original house is another converted outbuilding, which now appears to serve as a recreational room and a shed. To the N of the original house, near the rocky shoreline, is a low rendered wall with simply decorated wrought iron gate. This gate stood between the E gable and the adjacent outbuilding when the house was first surveyed in September 1978.

Historical information

A building matching the size of the original section of the present house is shown on this site on the 1834 OS map, but not noted in the contemporary valuation. It is noted in the second valuation of 1861, however, with the occupant recorded as John Moore, the lessor as Lord Dufferin, and the rateable value as £4.

The house was greatly extended in the late 20th century, with the addition of a large single-storey block, which stretches to the west side, where a former outbuilding once stood.

Small, single storey vernacular house, of probable pre 1834 origin, with a thatched roof. The house is set on the s shore of a sheltered bay to the E side of the Quarterland Rroad, c.2 milesSE of Killinchy. A large, modern, extension has been added to the rear of this property, but the façade of the original house does not appear to have witnessed significant external alteration in the process.
