Exterior description and setting

This slightly skewed triple-arch road bridge, carries a minor road over the River Lagan. Probably of early 19th century (possibly late 18th century) date, of random rubble masonry construction throughout.

Cutwaters at both ends of piers, rising to just above arch spring level. Arches are of semicircular profile, with split stone voussoirs. The right arch is dry in normal circumstances and the middle one is higher and wider than the others. Parapets terminate in in-projecting square piers. Square blind niche in middle of road face of upstream parapet. Grass verges between parapets and carriageway. Vestiges of water pipe in the form of metal brackets, across upstream (E) face. Deck is humped.

Setting

Surrounded to all sides by fields.

Historical information

This bridge is shown on all editions of the OS maps from 1833 onwards. It is probably of early 19th century (possibly late 18th century) date.

Evaluation

An early 19th century (possibly late 18th century) triple-arch rubble masonry road bridge over River Lagan. The bridge is relatively early, well-detailed and in original condition. Unaltered, it is a good example of its type, representing the development of infrastructure in the district.
