Exterior description and setting

A twin-arch rubble masonry bridge, that carries the Dromara-Rathfriland road over the River Lagan. Of random rubble blackstone throughout. Angled cutwater at both ends of pier, rising to arch crown level. Arches are of segmental profile with split stone voussoirs. Right-bank arch is wider and higher than left one. Parapets are coped with split stones laid on end. NE ends of both parapets repaired after traffic collisions. Deck is humped, partially curved and partially straight, with dogleg approaches.
Timber beams laid across upstream arches to prevent cattle access underneath arches.

Setting

A concrete laneway runs upstream from the bridge along the right bank. Island in river to (NW) downstream side. Houses along roadside at both ends, but otherwise surrounded by fields.

Historical information

'Bell's Bridge' is captioned on the 1834 OS six-inch map and all subsequent editions. It is probably of early 19th century date.

Evaluation

A twin-arch rubble masonry bridge, probably of early 19th century, perhaps late 18th century date, carrying a minor road over the River Lagan. Detailing is of an informal style and robust character. With only minor alterations, the bridge is a good example of its type in original condition and in its original setting, representing the development of infrastructure in the district.
