Exterior description and setting

One of a terrace of five identical houses fronting directly on to the west side of Kilmorey St.

A two and a half storey/ two bay house. Gabled natural slate roof. Ornate chimney at right end of roof apex comprises three separate square-based flues of square cross-section, all conjoined by an oversailing cap. Walls are cement rendered over projecting base course, and embellished with incised lines on ground floor. A moulded cill course runs across the façade at first floor window level. At top, four pairs of brackets support a deep projecting eaves course on which is a leaded rainwater gutter. A narrow moulded string course connects each pair of brackets at their bases. Gabled timber-framed dormer window rising from eaves has fretted bargeboards, carved wooden finial, 2/2 top-hung window to front (with circular vent above) and glazed cheeks.

The main entrance is at left and comprises a stained timber door (four raised and fielded panels) with transom light above. It is set within an ornate stucco surround. There is a distinctive geometric panel in the middle of each jamb. At the top of the jambs are two corbelled colonettes supporting an entablature in the middle of which is a raised panel embossed with ‘19’. At right is a 2/2 horizontally-divided sliding sash window, with painted cill. There are two 2/2 vertically-divided windows at first floor, in line with ground floor openings. The window openings have ornate stucco architraves embellished with rosettes in middle of jambs and keystoned head. The actual windows and door are modern replacements.

The right gable is abutted by another building. The left gable is cement rendered and has two supporting buttresses (there was previously another terrace of houses here, now demolished).

The rear wall is cement rendered. The ground floor was not visible. There is a 2/2 top-hung window to the half landing between ground and first floor, and an identical window to the first floor back room. There are three skylights to the rear pitch of the roof.

Historical information

First cited in 1878 valuation revision book, being noted as vacant, indicating newly completed. Occupied the following year.

One of a terrace of five two and a half storey/ two bay identical houses fronting directly on to the west side of Kilmorey Street. Part of a cohesive terrace of modest High Victorian houses, characterised by its ornate detailing to openings and eaves. This is one of several such terraces along this street, which, when taken together, greatly enhance the character of this part of the town.
